College of Arts and Social Sciences

Mphil and PHD

Notes:

1. The fees are in two categories, Category A are fees payable to UR which covers tuition fees (supervision costs, field work, laboratory and department facility use, examination fees, student union contributions and medical capitation fees. Category B fees are indicative payments to guide sponsors on how much money they can give to students as stipend for up-keep, literature, thesis production and stationery.

2. The proposed fees cover two degrees - the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree for Full-Time and Part-Time students.

3. For MPhil, three categories of fees are proposed – for non-laboratory programmes, for fieldwork based programmes and for laboratory based programmes. For PhD only one fees structure is proposed.

4. The proposal is guided by standards set in the National Qualification Frame work (on study time) and Fees approved by the Board of Directors of UR (as a minimum benchmark).

5. Prescribed time of study is 2 ½ years for MPhil and 3 years for PhD for full-time students and for part-time students it is, respectively, 3 ½ years and 5 years.

6. Students who do not complete their work in the prescribed time will seek extension on 6 months basis.

7. For MPhil students seeking extension, fees for the first 6 months extension will be 50% of Year 2 fees structure for full-time students and Year 3 fees structure for part-time students. For subsequent extensions (extension 2, 3) a 5% surcharge will be imposed on the 50% fees. Allowable maximum extensions are 3. So, a student on MPhil programme can do a maximum of 4 years if on full-time basis and 5 years if on part time basis.

8. For PhD students seeking extension, fees for each 6 months of the first two extensions will be 50% of Year 3 fees structure for full-time students and Year 4 fees structure for part-time students. For subsequent extensions (extension 3, 4, 5) a 5% surcharge will be imposed on the 50% fees. Allowable maximum extensions are 5. So, a student on PhD programme can do a maximum of 5 ½ years if on full-time basis and 7 ½ years if on part time basis.
