The University of Rwanda’s Huye Campus hosted a vibrant cultural exchange event titled “Muraho, Korea !”, jointly organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Rwanda and the University of Rwanda (UR). The event showcased music, dance, and martial arts to strengthen the growing ties between Rwanda and Korea.

The day featured a blend of performances, including a Korean singing and dance competition, traditional Rwandan dance, a Taekwondo demonstration by Rwanda’s national team, and a live concert by Samin Dong Rock, a Korean trio recognized by the French government for their fusion of traditional and modern music styles.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Jean Bosco Shema, Campus Administrator at UR-Huye, underlined the importance of culture in international relations.

“In a globalised world, culture is a powerful enabler,” he said. “Rwanda and Korea already enjoy strong relations, but such exchanges help us break cultural barriers, learn from one another, and build lasting friendships.”

CHOI Ba Reun, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Korean Embassy, noted that language and culture serve as bridges between countries that are geographically distant.

“Although our countries are geographically far apart, today’s event reminds us how close we can be through our shared love for culture and language. Events like this serve as bridges that bring people together.”

One of the event’s highlights was the preliminary round of the K-Contest, where participants competed in Korean music and dance. The top eight performers from the Huye round qualified for the Kigali final, set for July 25. Winners will not only receive prizes ; including a round-trip ticket to Korea ; but also stand a chance to enter the global K-pop competition held in South Korea.

Attendees were also treated to a Korean food tasting session featuring Bulgogi (Korean-style marinated beef) and Yuja ade, a traditional citron drink.
