Thursday September 03,2020 Minister of Education Dr Valentine UWAMARIYA paid working visit to University of Rwanda-Huye campus. The purpose of the visit was to see the state of UR Huye Campus infrastructure in general. The Minister was accompanied by Ag Director General of Rwanda Housing NSANZINEZA Noel, DG of The Higher Education Council Dr Rose MUKANKOMEJE, Southern Province Executive Secretary GAKIRE Bob, Huye District Mayor Ange SEBUTEGE. At Huye campus, they were received by UR top managers including Vice Chancellor Phil Cotton.

UR-Huye campus director of estate management Eng Juvénal NSENGIYUMVA presented the current infrastructures state and rehabilitation way forward. According to him rehabilitation activities have and will be done in three phases : 

Phase I of the rehabilitation and renovation of UR infrastructure which started in 2018 was focusing on rehabilitation and renovation of students hostels. Total for rehabilitation of Huye campus phase one is 1,581,451,639.

Phase II Rehabilitation and renovation will focus on teaching facilities(classrooms and labs) and non teaching facilities (students welfare facilities, residential houses , facilities improving the visibility of UR Huye campus. Activities contract is under negotiation with estimated cost of 3.5 Billions Rwandan Francs.

Rehabilitation and renovation phase III (in planning) will focus on remaining residential houses, playgrounds, Campus visibility facilities,..with estimated cost of 3.5 billion Rwandan Francs. During this visit, the other issue raised was aasbestos removal and replacement works on UR Huye buildings. According to NSANZINEZA Noel , DG of Rwanda Housing ( the government organ responsible for the job) , the plan is the total removal of all asbestos sheets on public buildings by 2021.

After touring the campus (offices, classes, laboratories and staff residences), Minister Dr Valentine UWAMARIYA said that all institutions (UR, District, RHA,..) must collaborate so that the rehabilitation of the campus respects the City master plan and the vision of Huye one of Rwanda secondary cities . Huye campus buildings occupy big space in Huye town.
