Brief Profile
Born and raised in Rwanda, Bakina, Wellars is the Assistant Lecturer at The University of Rwanda (UR)’s School of Journalism and Communication since Oct 2018 up to present. Bakina holds a Master of Arts (M.A) in Journalism from The University of Arizona, Tucson, US (Graduation May 2017).
He got his bachelor’s degree (with honors) from Institut Catholique de Kabgayi (Graduation : 2013) where he also served as the Ag. Dean of the program of journalism and communication studies.
Bakina who is also a Fulbrighter earned professional certificates such as TESOL Methodology and Practices, University of Oregon, Eugene, US (Completion : 2013).
Bakina’s research interests are media agenda setting, media agenda building, data journalism, misinformation, and media ethics. His papers were accepted and presented in the international academic conferences such as AEJMC 2017 Conference, Chicago, US, IAMCR 2019 Conference, Madrid, Spain & 2017-Fudan-Ohio Universities, Shanghai, China.
Part of his community engagement, Bakina works as media trainer on the national level. He is usually invited for facilitating various professional media training sessions organized by the partners of his school.
Prior to his career in university education, for about Bakina taught in three secondary schools located in Ruhango District. He also worked as a volunteer reporter at Radio Maria Rwanda, and Freelancer journalist.
